A step-by-step method for streak-free glass using a Swedish dishcloth, plus the mistakes that leave lint and smears behind.

Quick answer

Use one damp Swedish dishcloth to wash the glass and a second, barely damp cloth or a dry microfiber cloth to wipe it dry. The first cloth lifts dirt; the second removes the thin film of water that causes streaks. Skip paper towels entirely — they shed lint and leave fibers behind.

Why a Swedish dishcloth works on glass

A Swedish dishcloth is made from cellulose and cotton, so it holds water without dripping and releases it evenly across the surface. That even release is what prevents the puddle-and-dry pattern that leaves streaks. The cloth is also soft enough not to scratch glass, and because it is reusable, you are not tearing off a new sheet every time you hit a smudge.

The tradeoff: a soaked cloth will smear. You need to wring it out until it is damp, not wet. If you can squeeze a drop out of it, it is too wet for the final wipe.

What you need before you start

Two cloths work better than one: one for washing, one for drying. If you only have one, keep a dry microfiber cloth nearby for the final pass. A spray bottle with water and a drop of dish soap is enough for most windows; skip vinegar on tinted glass or aftermarket films unless the manufacturer says otherwise.

Work out of direct sunlight. Sun heats the glass and dries the cleaning solution before you can wipe it, which is the most common cause of streaks.

How to clean mirrors without paper towels

Mirrors behave like windows but show every residue. Use the same two-cloth method with a weaker solution — plain water is often enough for bathroom mirrors. Wipe in one direction with the damp cloth, then dry in the opposite direction with the second cloth. If you see a haze, you used too much soap; rinse the cloth and repeat with water only.

For bathroom mirrors with toothpaste splatter, let the damp cloth sit on the spot for ten seconds before wiping. Scrubbing dry grit is how you scratch a mirror.

Step-by-step: streak-free glass with a Swedish dishcloth

  1. Wet and wring the cloth: Hold the cloth under warm water, then wring it out until it stops dripping. It should feel damp, not heavy. Checkpoint: if you can squeeze out a drop, wring it again.
  2. Wipe the glass in one direction: Start at the top and work down or side to side, using overlapping strokes. Rinse the cloth when it picks up visible dirt. Mistake to avoid: scrubbing in circles, which spreads dirt into the corners.
  3. Dry with a second cloth: Use a dry or barely damp cloth to wipe the glass in the opposite direction. This removes the water film before it dries. Checkpoint: if streaks appear, your drying cloth is too wet.
  4. Buff the edges and corners: Fold the drying cloth and run the edge along the frame and corners, where water pools and leaves marks. Mistake to avoid: ignoring the edges — that is where most streaks show up first.
  5. Rinse and hang to dry: Rinse both cloths, wring them out, and hang them so air can circulate. A cloth left in a wet ball will smell. Next step: wash your cloths weekly, or more often if you clean greasy kitchen glass.
